Derby rivals could lose 20 players in exodus as Rooney completes first signing (2024)

Like many other clubs, Derby County are yet to make a move in the transfer market this summer which opens for business in 10 days' time.

Paul Warne will revamp his midfield after being left with virtually a clean slate following the departures of Conor Hourihane, Korey Smith and Max Bird.

But while Derby fans are waiting for the first arrival, there is plenty going on in the Championship and here Derbyshire Live brings you what is happening from around the division.

Twenty players could leave Leeds

Leeds United have been told they face a huge summer after failing to win promotion to the Premier League amid "whispers" that 20 players could leave the club.

The Whites failed to clinch a return to the top flight after losing the playoff final against Southampton at Wembley.

Leeds are now expected to sell players to balance the books in order to comply with profit and sustainability rules. Archie Gray, Willy Gnonto and Georginio Rutter have all been touted as potential exits during the summer.

And the Whites' former goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, admits it will be a tough summer for his former club.

“There have been whispers at least 20 players could leave Elland Road this summer,” he told Football Insider.

“You look at the likes of Cody Drameh, Stuart Dallas is obviously going to be moving to the coaching staff. Contracts and loan deals are coming to an end for Poveda, Byram, Rodon, Shackleton, Anthony, Roberts, Ayling and Cooper.

“It’s going to be a really huge summer for Leeds to rebuild. The first thing is they are going to have to cut their cloth accordingly. But they are going to have to take stock of what they are going to lose, how much they are going to bring into the club, what they can get for the players out on loan.

“It’s about seeing what’s going to be going out before you know what’s going to be coming in. It’s hard to say what positions they are going to need because you don’t know what players are going to be around."

Coventry not prepared to meet Rudoni fee

Coventry City would not be willing to splash out £10m on Huddersfield Town's Jack Rudoni following links to the attacking midfielder.

Rudoni is facing an uncertain future at the Terriers who were relegated to League One after a disappointing campaign.

He will have no shortage of admirers in the Championship and Mark Robins' Coventry City have been touted as one destination.

Coventry are looking to rebuild their squad after a season which saw them push Manchester United all the way in an FA Cup semi final.

But according to Coventry Live, the Sky Blues would not be prepared to fork out that kind of cash for just one player.

Ogbeta completes Plymouth move

Nathanael Ogbeta has completed a move to Plymouth on a free transfer - and hopes Wayne Rooney can bring the best out of him.

The full-back put pen to paper yesterday and becomes the first signing of the Rooney era after leaving Swansea City. And now he will be playing under one of the greatest players the country has ever produced which, he hopes, will hope bring another dimension to his game.

“I really hope that with Wayne coming in, he’ll be someone that can really help me take my game to the next level and take this club to the next level as well,” said Nathanael.

“The club informed him of the sort of players that they want to bring in, and he said that when he saw me and was able to see some of the footage, he was delighted and really wanted me to come in. The way he wants to play is an attacking style of play, and I'm an attacking full-back, wing-back type player that loves to be on the last line, being able to get crosses in and making things happen in the final third.

“When he was telling me about what he wants to do and what he wants to implement, a lot of it sat really well with me and was in line with the type of game that I want to play here as well.

“One of the best matchups that I had against [Argyle] was against Bali. I feel like me and Bali are very similar; we can manipulate the ball, go one-v-one, are very comfortable in possession, can go left or right. I feel like that's what I bring as well, getting crosses in, getting shots off, and being pivotal in build-up play.

“I like to defend as well and that's a good thing. I've got a defensive mindset as well. It's not just all about attacking, I want to help the team stop crosses. I feel like I bring calmness into football teams and that's what I'm trying to implement. Not panicking on the ball, not forcing things, but being able to manipulate things so I can go forward and really help the team advance.”
